MEET OUR CREW
OUR STORY
Deer Harbor Charters was founded in 1988 by Tom and Jean Averna, long before whale watching became the popular activity it is today. Originally focused on showcasing the diverse wildlife that calls the San Juan Islands home, the company offered tours highlighting the region's rich ecosystems, including kelp forests, sea birds, and marine mammals. Tom, a pioneering figure in the industry, was a founding member of the Pacific Whale Watch Association (PWWA) and helped shape the early days of responsible whale watching in the Pacific Northwest. Today, Deer Harbor Charters continues to uphold the same values of education, conservation, and respect for the environment, proudly remaining a member of the PWWA. With decades of experience and a deep-rooted passion for the region, Nate, Hailey, Tom, and the entire Deer Harbor Charters team remain committed to offering guests unforgettable, sustainable wildlife experiences in the heart of the San Juan Islands.
