Whale Watch FAQ's
Both morning and afternoon tours are great options for whale watching around Orcas Island. Unlike much of the West Coast, we don’t typically experience a strong afternoon wind increase, so sea conditions are often favorable throughout the day.
Afternoon tours do have a slight advantage, as they allow more time for sightings to develop and give us additional reports to work with. Morning tours are ideal if you have afternoon plans or are catching a ferry later in the day, while afternoon tours are perfect for guests who prefer a relaxed morning and a later departure.
In short, you can’t go wrong—choose the time that best fits your schedule.

The prime whale watching season around Orcas Island and the San Juan Islands is May through October. During this time, conditions are ideal and whale activity is at its most consistent.
Most migratory whale species—including humpback, minke, and gray whales—return to our sheltered waters to feed beginning in April and May. Orca whales, however, are present year-round. Orcas are actually the largest species of dolphin (not true whales!), and two genetically distinct ecotypes live, hunt, and socialize in our region throughout the year.
While winter whale sightings are possible, off-season conditions (November 1 – March 31) can be less predictable, with fewer reliable sighting reports and more variable weather. For the best combination of whale activity, calm seas, and overall experience, late spring through early fall is ideal.
